The School Bus Monitors primary responsibility is to provide support within the student transportation services with specific responsibilities for assisting special education students during transport to and from school and/or special activities; and ensuring the safe, orderly, and professional transportation of students on an assigned bus route.
Ride the bus/van each day on the morning, noon, and afternoon routes as assigned.
Assist special education students and other passengers with safe loading and unloading from buses during normal and emergency situations.
Secure students and/or their equipment (i.
e.
, restraints, wheel chair tie downs, seat belts, etc.
) to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
Be knowledgeable on all rules and regulations for the transportation of school students.
Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school vehicles.
Under the direction of the School Bus Driver, the Monitor will operate the wheelchair lift and secure the wheelchairs in the vehicle.
Display the highest ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, co-workers, and members of the community.
Serve as a role model for students and staff in demonstrating positive attitudes, appropriate attire and grooming, and an effective work ethic.
Attend and participate in required training programs, staff meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc.
for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions.
Instructs children for the purpose of enforcing rules/regulations and maintaining student safety and well-being.
Monitor students with special needs until released to teacher, instructional assistant, parent, etc.
to ensure the safe transportation of all passengers.
Maintain discipline when students are in the vehicle; must be knowledgeable of student regulations.
Report inappropriate behavior to the School Bus Driver and the Monitor Supervisor.
Acts as crossing guard where students are required to cross the street.
Prepare reports (i.
e.
, incident reports, passenger misconduct, etc.
) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, conveying information, and/or complying with established guidelines.
Report observations and/or incidents (i.
e.
, discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.
) and communicate information to appropriate personnel for further action.
Notify the School Bus Driver and the Monitor Supervisor of any equipment problems.
Enforce regulations against smoking or other contraband in the vehicle.
Abide by LPVEC guidelines for Student Transportation and LPVEC personnel policies.
Maintain confidentiality of records and information gained, as part of exercising professional duties, about children, their families, and other employees.
Participates in evacuation drills with student.
