ABOUT THE UMASS AMHERST FOUNDATION Established in 2003, the University of Massachusetts Amherst Foundation (UMAF), a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, exists to raise philanthropic funds in support of the University of Massachusetts Amherst's mission and highest aspirations.
Located on the Amherst campus and wholly dedicated to supporting the University's mission, UMAF is a separately governed nonprofit organization with its own health, wellness, and retirement benefits.
UMAF serves the University of Massachusetts Amherst community by serving as a best practices resource for fundraising strategy and implementation.
The Assistant Director of Development for the iCons Program (Integrated Concentration in STEM) in the College of Natural Sciences (CNS) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is responsible for increasing philanthropic support for iCons, focusing on leadership annual giving and corporate relations.
This position reports to the Senior Executive Director of Development and Chief Development Officer and works in collaboration with the Executive Director of iCons.
The Assistant Director will join UMAF at a time of transformation and growth as we prepare for the public launch of the UMAF's $600M comprehensive campaign.
This opportunity will be motivating for a person who has initiative, creativity, and desire to build something from the ground up.
Note: This is a 3-year term limited position.
Continuation of the position is contingent upon funding.
Location: This is a full-time hybrid position and is open to employees in select US states: Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire.
RESPONSIBILITIES Creates and implements successful strategies for leadership annual gift solicitations of donors to iCons that (1) retain current and re-engage lapsed donors and (2) grow giving levels of current donors; develops an iCons alumni "giving back" fundraising initiative.
Under the direction of the Chief Development Officer and in collaboration with the UMAF's Annual Giving team, the Assistant Director will be responsible for building a pipeline of leadership annual giving donors and major gift prospects specific to the donor continuum: identification and qualification, and cultivation, solicitation, stewardship of individual donors.
Develop systems (including efficient use of donor database) to identify, qualify, and solicit leadership annual gift prospects with emphasis on $10,000-$25,000+ in support of iCons.
Recruits and solicits corporate partners for the iCons Industry Consortium; cultivates and stewards partners to increase philanthropic support and leverage student engagement/internship opportunities.
Ensure continuous progress in moving assigned donors through donor cycle (e.
g.
, qualify, engage, cultivate, solicit, and steward).
Document all quality contacts and moves management strategies through the use of the prospect tracking system (Advance).
Support the iCons Advisory Board in development-related matters and manage assigned prospects and volunteers as appropriate.
Promotes awareness of the Mahoney iCons Alumni Award.
Serves as staff liaison for the Mahoney Life Sciences Prize and works in collaboration with the CNS Associate Dean of Research and Innovation to support the application review process and engage with the industry panel judges to strengthen the College of Natural Sciences Advancement efforts.
Assists with planning all aspects of the Mahoney Life Sciences Prize event in coordination with respective university departments and internal/external partners.
Compiles relevant data/information and coordinates the development of progress report for the iCons program and the Mahoney Life Sciences Prize Complete donor briefings and prepare written correspondence for senior leadership associated with your assigned prospects.
Prepare the dean, other administrators, or volunteers for development activities.
Participate in key events, committees and other opportunities focused on cultivating relationships with donors, prospects, and internal partners, and as requested by the Executive Director of iCons and the Senior Executive Director of Development and Chief Development Officer.
Maintain a high degree of confidentiality and adhere to the policies and procedures for accepting, recording, and acknowledging gifts.
UMAF is building and growing, and this position will support those efforts with other duties and projects as assigned from time to time.
QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree.
Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in fundraising, preferably within a non-profit or educational institution.
Equivalent experience in sales, marketing, or related field will be considered.
Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills.
Excellent administrative skills.
Previous experience working with senior level executives.
Passion for donor-centric philosophies and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Demonstrated ability to effectively work and interact respectfully within a diverse and inclusive environment.
Ability to engage and effectively communicate with diverse audiences, including prospects, donors, executives, volunteer stakeholders, etc.
Valid driver's license and ability to travel and work evenings and weekends occasionally.
